What is White Privilege & does it Really Exist?
Whites today, like all people, are victims of circumstance...albeit a better set of circumstances. However, uneducating them out of the conventional wisdom of their colonial forebears regarding the quiet subjugation and strategic control of a numerous proletariat i.e. minority is a task only they can undertake with any real hope of success; in much the same way blacks must fight to see themselves positively in a world where they are practically dead last in virtually every facet of society.
As a black man myself, I find that a great deal of white people and those who might easily identify as white are too often blinded to the stark realities that blacks and other non-whites must endure on a variety of levels and in a number of countries. Apparently, it isn't yet conceivable to many of them how their disregard or lack of notice can hurt the functionality of our precious Democratic Republic. It was King who said,"Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere." And It's true apparently; Yesterday, police with their batons only cracked the skulls of black folk marching in the streets. Today however, they crack white ones to and subject them to the same kinds of indignities more commonly applied to blacks. These concerns have only begun to take center stage because an inordinate amount of white people have suffered. Fortunately, Tim Wise is one who digs deep and shares his observations with those who need it most, other white people. My sincere hope is that more of them will not only acknowledge these truths but act on them courageously for their own sense of integrity and moral responsibility. Perhaps then, some semblance of brotherhood within the common thread of humanity might begin to flourish once more in a sea of many different cultures. But until such time, the white man's burden isn't us...it's himself.
