#38 The Garden Metaphor

November 10, 2010

From the Star Wars Universe, I have decided to post an interesting conversation between the wise Jedi Master, Yoda and the ill-fated king of the Sephi, Alaric... This dialogue is taken from a story entitled "The Best Blades" by Jeremy Barlow back in 2004, in which king Alaric uses a garden metaphor to illustrate the vigilance & dexterity necessary to maintain the delicate balance among divergent forces in the ecology of diverse planetary systems.

(This is an abbreviated version):

Alaric: Thank you for meeting me, Yoda, away from the eyes and ears of my court. I have enemies within these walls. My nephew has been on Coruscant (The Universal Capital of the Galaxy ) too long. He  has lost touch with his roots here on Thustra. ...I wish our reunion could have been under different circumstances. Yet if not for current events, who knows how much more time might have gone by before we saw one another again? It's a small thing, but at least there is that positive side to all of this. I want to show you something.

[They begin to stroll through the private palace gardens]

These gardens are very precious to me. Perhaps more so than anything else on Thustra. On this beautiful world, it's easy to take these grounds for granted - to assume it's just another greenhouse. It's  easy to miss what makes this place special. To miss things like this [Alaric takes a momentary pause to marvel at it's beauty] These flowers are native to an uncharted world on the far side of the galaxy. I've nurtured them for over a hundred years. I cherish them as I would my own children.

As you can see I've taken great care to isolate them. To protect them from the other more aggressive species that would overrun them. Yet I don't bear any ill will toward those predatory species. They do what their nature dictates, and I arrange my garden to accommodate that. Left unchecked, there are certain species here that would overrun the entire garden and destroy the eco-system's stability. But I don't let that happen. I give each a place to grow and to live -- but a place where they can do no harm to their neighbors. In many ways, my garden is like our own galaxy. Every system -- every planet -- offers something unique to the whole. In turn, each has its own individual needs, and must be cared for in kind.

Like my garden, the galaxy requires great patience and attention to maintain, aggressive elements need to be kept in check, and to survive all need to live in harmony. Unlike my garden, however, there is no harmony in the galaxy right now, but I have patience. These conflicts will pass. The republic will eventually put its house back in order and when it does, Thustra will be there. Until then, though... the corruption runs too deep and  is spreading too quickly. It threatens to poison Thustra at its very roots. My nephew's already been infected.

But you know this. It must be difficult for you, trying to maintain the Jedi's integrity while the Republic exploits you, sending you out to enforce its will. I know you are beyond evil's grip, and that your motives are true. But I wish I could show you that you're fighting for the wrong side.

Yoda: Weakened the Republic has become, yes, and strained by politics bickering and selfishness. Unblemished are the honorable principles upon which it was founded. A duty I have, to protect those principles.

Alaric: Even if what you're fighting for may someday turn on you? Yoda, we've seen this pattern play out before , on a smaller scale, in other governments, and  it always ends badly. What can I do to make you reconsider.. ?

Yoda: Keep me here forever you cannot.

Alaric: I know...   but perhaps I can keep you long enough to change your mind. I wish we could stay here and talk all day, but there are things to which I must attend. My nephew might try to move against you. You may need to defend yourselves. I know you won't act rashly. Here take these.

[Hands him the light saber & begins to walk off]

Our friendship has seen the rise and fall of other conflicts. It will survive this one, too. We may be on opposite sides, but I hope that's only temporary. Remain in the garden as long as you like. Being around all of this often clears my head. I'll see you later, old friend.

#37 Becoming an Empathic Civilisation

November 9, 2010

Transcending the limited power of a multiplicity of cultures squabbling over their place in the world ...including the one (African),  THIS website advocates, is ultimately the big idea. I cannot overestimate the need for all of us (black, white, brown, & yellow) to see each other as one big family. However, blacks won't be invited to the table as serious contributors- if @all; I'm trying to get them/you, to see that! Blacks (& definitely NOT the ones whose only real interest is in making mon...

#36 Invencible by Pat Benetar (1985)

November 8, 2010

This song is ripe with themes of revolution; indeed, it is a lingering message for those of our time who would dare to pick up that banner and run with it. Ultimately, it is a message for everyone because this system will rip all of us apart one by one. Once, I heard someone say: We hang together, or they'll hang us separately. Here are some of the profound lines in the song:

...What are we running for?
We've got the right to be angry!
 What are we running for?
When there's no where we can run ...

#35 Zandisile by Simphiwe Dana

November 5, 2010

Today's post is heartily dedicated to two very special women out there in Cyberspace: Jessica my sister, who may very well best me one day in debating topics of similar interest (history, politics, economics, & culture); & Monica, whose craftsmanship and creativity are all the craze these days apparently @Gems by Monica. This song is a fine example of the soulful jazz tunes emanating out of the heart of Africa, from which we all descend. Just below the video are the words to the song. We brot...

#33 The Ashes of Worlds (book 7 of 7), a Review

November 3, 2010
[...so far]

For some time now I've been anxious to share with you (the avid readers of sci-fi) my thoughts on book 7 of 7, the Ashes of Worlds, as it is a very interesting and lively tale denoting the very best of human attributes. Kevin J. Anderson (KJA) is truly a master story teller; his tremendous talent proves a stunning testament to just how boundless the human imagination really is. I tell ya, it's quite a treat to witness someone in their element. Well, that's enough adulation for now....

#32 Lagaan (2001)

November 2, 2010
Lagaan is a neat story about how a small sleepy village somewhere in India began to assert itself against the mighty British Empire during the Victorian Era, just around the time it was starting to show its age. The chosen battlefield upon which the uneven tempers of the local villagers clashed with the smugly casual nonchalance of the Empire was a polite (or impolite, depending on which side you take) game of cricket. I'm trying not to give the movie away too much, so I'm having to tip-toe ...

#30 Sort of Revolution by Fink

October 31, 2010

I heard this song @the end of episode 3 season 2 of Stargate Universe (SGU).  It was very moving episode. Unfortunately, one of the main characters was left behind trying to make sure his fellow soldiers could leave safely while at the same time trying to restore vital ship functions. He was surrounded  by hostiles and there was absolutely no way to retrieve him in time.

If you like the cinematic version of this song, consider to the original; it's just as good (Click here).

#29 Have a Vision

October 29, 2010

On our way home from Borders (A Local Bookstore) some nearly two years ago, my then-adolescent sister and I engaged an interesting conversation. I noted another teenager walking along the same path with his friends. "Look at this cat,"I mentioned with feigned disapproval,"he doesn't look like much does he?" His jeans were sagging with boxers showing. She agreed with casual disregard. "However," I said sounding conspiratorial with eye brows furrowed attempting to draw more of her interest,"wha...
