Under: Musings
The
following words were for my adolescent sister who had scored well over
1200 on her SAT's:
Even though you have achieved high marks in your
academic career thus far despite being a product of the public school
system, this doesn't necessarily offer the kind of development or promise
that is needed in the black community - especially if our educational
system is racked with ineffective and outdated methods - not to mention
hidden agendas. If anything, it denotes conformity at the very first
levels of a life-long conditioning that will only regiment subservience
to a hierarchical system of have & have-nots i.e. a class/caste
system. Eventually, you too will believe transforming it to be utterly
impossible and shamefully submit to it...hoping for mercy/kindness from
those above who must invariably exploit you to maintain their own
livelihoods. Don't get me wrong sis, I know the countless hours you put
in so go ahead and revel in your accolades, but please realize that
there are greater forces at play here. Eons ago, education was
initially for the benefit of all! Today's Everything-for-Me philosophy
has corrupted our collective sense of survival and this goes against
our more traditionally communal African heritage. Blacks now go to
school to better themselves for themselves - singly that is. They wish to leave the HOOD instead of transforming it.
Let no one convince you
otherwise!
Of
course etiquette got the better of me, and so I was a bit more
circumspect:
Hey sis, congratulations! Just remember, your schooling
is not just for you, but for all of us. Otherwise, your wits only go
to make other groups of people richer, while yours continue to lag
behind. Think on this, perhaps one day you may help save us all.
